[[Optimus Prime (Generation 1)|Optimus Prime]] dispatched [[Ironhide]] and several other Autobots to the city from [[Moonbase 1]] in order to obtain [[Energon]] for their assault to retake [[Cybertron]] from the [[Decepticons]]. Learning of this endeavor, [[Megatron (Generation 1)|Megatron]] and a group of [[Decepticons]] attacked their shuttle in transit, killing its occupants and using it to slip past the defenses on Earth in order to attack Autobot City. Their ruse only partially worked, as [[Hot Rod (Transformers)|Hot Rod]] and [[Daniel Witwicky]] spotted them as they were about to land, resulting in a battle between the Decepticons and Autobot defenders. The struggle resulted in the deaths of several Autobots, and the city would have been annihilated had it not been for the arrival of Optimus Prime in response to a distress call sent by [[Blaster (Transformers)|Blaster]].

With the [[Dinobots]] employed to counter [[Devastator (Transformers)|Devastator]], Optimus led the Autobot counterattack and engaged in a final duel with Megatron, only to end up fatally wounded as a result. However, his efforts enabled the Autobots to drive the Decepticons from the city. Afterwards, it was the site of Optimus passing the [[Matrix of Leadership]] to [[Ultra Magnus (Generation 1)|Ultra Magnus]] and the subsequent departure of Magnus' forces from Earth to confront the evil [[Unicron]]. Later, Metroplex would rise from the city in order to battle [[Trypticon]] after the Decepticons forged a temporary alliance with the [[Quintessons]].

In ''[[Transformers: The Headmasters]]'', Autobot City was frequently revisited as the primary center of Autobot operations on Earth and the base from which Ultra Magnus and Metroplex both operated.
